“Moses Katuramu (born 1913 in Fort Portal - passed on 1986 in Mbarara) was a carpenter. He trained from Makerere, then still a technical college and was a teacher and deputy headmaster at Mbarara Highschool (1940-1949). After that he had his own carpentry workshop in Ruhoro (Mbarara) and started his own carpentry school in Ruhiri in 1954.

Next to all this he owned a camera and used it a lot. Mostly to photograph the people around him, but sometimes he was also commissioned to make portraits or cover events. The collection is kept in a very good state by Musa’s son Jerry Bagonza who gave permission to share his father’s work with you. He already recognised some of the people on the photographs and gave us some dates. But, as the whole of History In Progress Uganda this is a work in progress.” - (view the whole collection via History In Progress Uganda)

Elly Rwakoma, b.1935 and still going strong. Elly worked at the YMCA in Jinja as a social worker, was a presidential photographer for Obote and Amin, had an unfortunate episode with the latter, forcing him into exile (that we’ll tell you the full story about later) and had his own photo studio first in Jinja and later in Bushenyi. In this album you will find photos he made and photos that were made of him. - view the whole album or “like”  History In Progress Uganda on facebook for the updated album.
