Countdown to Uganda’s golden jubilee celebration: Wheels that will forever be remembered. They drove utility cars, sat behind the wheels of the some of the most luxurious vehicles of the time and now at 50, Ugandans are spoilt for choice — given the influx of all sorts of available models. The Daily Monitor identified some of the cars that have made a statement over the 50 years of the country’s independence.

1966 Ford AngliaThis is a United Kingdom car —that locally became to be known as Angalia—a Swahili word literary meaning “look”. Those who still have the 1966 model will tell you that it was passed over to them by their grandparents. And those who drove it then were perceived to be of a high social class. It is said it was speedy and sporty like car with a speed limit of 180 km/hr.

Earlier this month on June 6th, the very first Vintage and Classic Autoshow was held in Kampala at Sheraton Kampala Gardens in celebration of the upcoming “Uganda @ 50”. Over 40 cars were part of the exhibition, some from the Uganda museum and others from personal collections.
